What kinds of brass are there
Jul 02, 2022
Brass classification can be divided into: ordinary brass and special brass.
(1) Plain brass. It is an alloy of copper and zinc.
Ordinary brass classification: when the zinc content is less than 39%, zinc can dissolve in copper to form a single phase, called single phase brass, good plasticity, suitable for hot and cold compression processing. When the zinc content is greater than 39%, there is a single phase and copper and zinc based B solid solution, called dual-phase brass, B makes the plasticity small and tensile strength rise, only suitable for thermal pressure processing. If the mass fraction of zinc continues to increase, the tensile strength will decrease and it is useless.
Brass alloys containing less than 36% zinc are composed of solid solutions and have good cold working performance. For example, brass containing 30% zinc is commonly used to make shell casings, commonly known as shell brass or seventy-three brass. Brass alloys with zinc content between 36 and 42% are composed of and solid solutions, of which the most commonly used is hexagonal brass with zinc content of 40%.
In general, single-phase brass is used for cold deformation processing and dual-phase brass is used for hot deformation processing.
(2) special brass. The addition of other alloying elements to the common brass in the composition of a plurality of alloys called brass. Often added elements are lead, tin, aluminum, etc., can be called lead brass, tin brass, aluminum brass. The purpose of adding alloying elements. It is mainly to improve the tensile strength to improve the process.
Special brass is classified as:
Lead brass: Lead is actually insoluble in brass and is distributed as a free particle at grain boundaries. Lead brass has two kinds of α and (α+β) according to its structure.α lead brass can only be cold deformed or hot extruded because of the large harmful effect of lead and the low plasticity at high temperature. (α+β) lead brass has good plasticity at high temperature and can be forged.
Tin brass: the addition of tin in brass can significantly improve the heat resistance of alloy, especially the ability to improve the corrosion resistance of seawater, so tin brass is called "navy brass".
Manganese brass: Manganese has greater solubility in solid brass. The strength and corrosion resistance of the alloy can be significantly improved without decreasing the ductility by adding 1% ~ 4% manganese into brass.
