What is the anatomical difference between epidural anesthesia and lumbar puncture anesthesia
These two types of anesthesia are collectively referred to as intraspinal anesthesia. The anatomy of the spinal canal is followed by ligamentum flavum-dura mater-arachnoid-spinal cord. Between the ligamentum flavum and the dural membrane is the epidural space, and placing anesthetics here is called epidural anesthesia. There is a potential anatomical gap between the dura mater and the arachnoid, which is generally indistinguishable clinically. There is a gap between the arachnoid and the spinal cord called the subarachnoid space. The placement of anesthetics here is called subarachnoid anesthesia. The difference between epidural (cavity) anesthesia and subarachnoid anesthesia is that the spinal dura is the boundary.
