What is a spinal needle? How is it different from other needles?

Other than being a bit longer than a typical needle used for injection, a spinal needle has two main features that make it different.

First, the angle of the bevel is less acute. This is called a ‘quinke’ point. This less pointy point means it takes a bit more pressure to make it cut through flesh, which allows the practitioner to have a better sense of feel for when they penetrate the various different layers of tissue on the way in towards your spine. This helps them avoid going too deep. Going too deep is bad.

Second, a spinal needle has a stylet. A stylet is a wire with an outer diameter the same as the needle’s inner diameter. The end of the stylet is sharpened too, and there’s normally an index mark on the stylet and needle hub to help keep the cutting edge of the needle and the stylet aligned. This means that the end of the needle cuts as if it was a single solid blade, not a sharpened pipe. This helps avoid ‘coring’ where the needle cuts a chunk of flesh out the same diameter as the needle. If the needle can’t core out a chunk, it just cuts a slit, which closes when it is withdrawn. Especially in the case of the spine, you really want to make sure not to leave a leak when you take the needle out.
