What are the properties of aluminum?

Jul 05, 2022

Aluminum is an active metal. In dry air, the surface of aluminum immediately forms a dense oxide film about 50 angstroms thick, so that aluminum will not be further oxidized and can withstand water. But aluminum powder burns easily when mixed with air; Molten aluminum reacts violently with water; Many metal oxides can be reduced to the corresponding metal at high temperature; Aluminum is amphoteric, soluble in both strong bases and dilute acids.

Aluminum is a light silver metal. It's malleable. Commodities are usually made in rod, sheet, foil, powder, ribbon and filamentous form. In humid air, an oxide film can be formed to prevent metal corrosion. Aluminum powder and aluminum foil burn furiously in the air with heat, emitting a blinding white flame. Soluble in dilute sulfuric acid, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide solution, insoluble in water. Relative density 2.70. Melting point is 660 ℃. The boiling point of 2327 ℃.

It is widely used for its light weight, good electrical and thermal conductivity, high reflectivity and oxidation resistance. The aluminum used for daily dishes is usually called "fine steel" or "grade steel".
