The specific process of biopsy

There are seven steps in the biopsy process:

1. The source of living tissue specimens: mainly from surgically excised, clamped, and scraped specimens. Specimens are collected by clinicians, and the collected specimens should be packed in a specimen bag, and the patient information, the time of separation, and the fixed time should be indicated on the specimen bag;

2. Specimen fixation: Immediately soak the obtained tissue in 10% neutral formalin, and the amount of fixative should be 5-10 times the size of the specimen. The time required for specimen fixation depends on the size of the specimen, generally 4-6 hours for small specimens, and 18-24 hours or longer for large specimens;

3. Specimen submission, specimen numbering and registration, specimen observation and collection, no matter the size of specimens submitted for inspection, should be carefully observed and recorded its shape, size, color, surface and section changes, whether there are abnormal lesions and Tumor, and the relationship with the surrounding. The size of the tissue taken for slicing is 1.5×1.5cm, and the thickness is between 0.2-0.3cm;

4. Preparation of tissue slices: It is now done in automatic dehydrators and staining machines. Procedures include fixation, dehydration, clearing, wax dipping, embedding, sectioning, staining, mounting, and labeling;

5. After the pathological preparation is completed: the tissue slices are handed over to the pathologist, the technician checks the number of slices with the doctor, makes the handover and records;

6. Film reading: Observe the slice under an optical microscope, analyze and identify the diseased tissue and cell morphology, and then make a diagnosis of various diseases combined with the naked eye and clinical data. However, for some difficult and rare cases, it is necessary to conduct auxiliary diagnosis by histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy or molecular biology techniques on the basis of the above-mentioned routine examination;

7. Issuance of the pathological diagnosis report: The issuance of the pathological diagnosis report must be handed over to the clinician. In the case of no special examination, from the receipt of the specimen to the issuance of the pathological report, the biopsy process takes about 5-7 days. time.
