The History of Hypodermic Needle - Part 2

Oct 27, 2021

It was Charles Gabriel Pravaz and Alexander Wood who created hypodermic syringe.  The former was from Scotland and the latter was from France. It is very important for an inventor to patent her work; otherwise the idea may get stolen. At that time who patented what was not found on google. It was lying somewhere in an office in the inventor’s country. The syringe developed by Pravaz came to usage at the same time when Wood outlined his work. This is the reason why both of them are credited for this invention.

Letitia Mumford Geer was the first to patent a one handed syringe design. Before that one needed the help of another person for administration. At that time this was not considered very useful, forgetting about the future. Reusable syringe was developed by Chance Brothers in England along with a removable barrel and plunger. It was an all glass syringe type. It was also difficult to replace the syringe parts and was also financially difficult.

The biggest change in the field of medicine was the invention of polymer and its usage. Needles and syringes is one of the best examples. Colin Murdoch was the first one to produce a disposable type plastic syringe in 1956. After that more and more number of patents began heap in patents office and children began to fear visiting a doctor.
