Should lumbar puncture be done for sepsis?

Patients with sepsis do not have to undergo lumbar puncture examination. When encephalitis or meningitis is suspected, further lumbar puncture and cerebrospinal fluid examination can be performed in order to confirm the diagnosis. If the examination of cerebrospinal fluid indicates a large number of cells and a relatively high protein content, these indicators can indirectly reflect whether there is encephalitis or meningitis. Of course, it is necessary to analyze some meningeal irritation signs, some characteristics of headache, and the characteristics of head CT or head magnetic resonance.

If there is no headache and no signs of meningeal irritation, a lumbar puncture is usually not required. The usual tests are blood routine, blood culture, and some bone puncture tests if necessary.
