Liver biopsy for diagnosis of liver cancer

May 03, 2022

Although pathological examination is the gold standard for diagnosing tumors, liver biopsy is not necessarily required for the diagnosis of HCC. Liver cancer can be clinically diagnosed if one of the following three conditions is met:

1. There are two typical imaging findings, ultrasound, enhanced CT, magnetic resonance or selective hepatic arteriography, and the lesions are >2cm;

2. A typical imaging manifestation, the lesion is more than 2cm, and the carcinoembryonic antigen value is more than 400ng/mL;

3. Liver biopsy is positive. If the diagnosis of liver cancer is supported by imaging results, the clinical diagnosis can be made. If the imaging results are insufficient for diagnosis, liver biopsy is required to confirm the diagnosis.
