Is liver biopsy painful?

Mar 11, 2022

Liver puncture is generally not dangerous, and there is no obvious pain after local anesthesia.

Minor complications following percutaneous liver biopsy include: transient local discomfort at the biopsy site; pain requiring pain medication; mild transient hypotension (due to vasovagal response).

About 1/4 of patients have right upper quadrant or right shoulder pain after surgery, and the pain is usually mild and transient dull pain.
