Is a noninvasive spinal needle as effective as a traumatic needle for lumbar puncture?
Nov 02, 2022
The most common complication of lumbar puncture is postpuncture headache (PLPH). Recent studies have confirmed that the use of noninvasive spinal needles significantly reduces the risk of PLPH. However, most neurologists still use traumatic needles, which may be caused by misconceptions and beliefs about the actual performance of nontraumatic spinal needles. Therefore, we investigated the practical properties of noninvasive and traumatic spinal needles. The experimental setup using the liquid column was used in conjunction with (1) a physiological NaCl 0.9% solution and (2) a solution with a high protein content. Flow rate and pressure measurement duration were measured using trauma and nontrauma needles. The difference in mean flow rates between the two needle types using NaCl solution was small
