Is a lumbar puncture harmful to the body?
Apr 28, 2022
Including back pain after lumbar puncture and post-lumbar puncture headache (PLPH). In most patients, PLPH occurs within 3 days of lumbar puncture. For these patients, bed rest, adequate fluids, and simple pain medication are required. Rare (incidence <0.01%) but potentially more serious complications include post-lumbar puncture infection, spinal and subdural hematomas, and deep cerebral vein thrombosis. In a multicenter feasibility study of lumbar puncture, the incidence of complications after lumbar puncture was approximately 31%, but most were mild and serious complications were rare. Back pain, headache, and typical PLPH occurred in 17%, 19%, and 9%, respectively. Only 0.3% of patients required blood patch therapy, and 0.7% required hospitalization.
