Subcutaneous injection is a method of injecting a liquid medicine into the loose connective tissue between the skin and muscle. It is suitable for injecting medicinal liquid, vaccine (bacteria) and serum with little or no irritation. The injection should be done at a site with thin skin and rich subcutaneous tissue, such as the back of the forelimb scapula, the side of the neck, and the subcutaneous side of the thorax.
The injection method is to sterilize the local hair first. After that, the surgeon lifts the skin with the thumb, index finger and middle finger of the left hand to make it into a pointed triangular fold, inserts a needle in the center of the fold with the right hand, and pierces 1-2 cm. Move freely, let go of the left hand, and inject the medicinal liquid. After the injection, pull out the needle, disinfect with iodine tincture, and gently press the injection site to prevent bleeding and extravasation of the liquid through the needle hole.
Drugs injected subcutaneously are mainly absorbed by capillaries and lymphatic vessels and then enter the blood circulation. Due to the subcutaneous adipose tissue, the absorption rate is slow, and it is generally absorbed 10 to 15 minutes after the injection of the liquid. Attention should be paid to subcutaneous injection; the needle can move freely when it penetrates the skin correctly. If the needle tip penetrates into the muscle, the needle cannot swing left and right. If the twitching piston returns blood, it indicates that it has penetrated into the blood vessel. Avoid blood vessels to prevent direct injection of medicines or vaccines into blood vessels.
