How is a thyroid biopsy performed?

May 04, 2022

By palpating the thyroid gland or using ultrasound guidance, the doctor uses a needle-covered syringe or puncture gun to aspirate components of the thyroid lesion (including the thyroid tissue itself or nodules).

These components are then sent to the hospital pathology department for analysis and evaluation, which completes a thyroid biopsy.

In order to avoid pain, some hospitals will also do local anesthesia for the patient before the puncture.
