How exactly is bone marrow aspiration done?

Dec 20, 2021

1. Selection of the puncture site: usually choose the anterior superior iliac spine, posterior superior iliac spine and sternum stem as the puncture point.

2. Position selection: Prone position or lateral position is selected for puncture of posterior superior iliac spine, and supine position for puncture of sternal and anterior superior iliac spine.

3. Routinely disinfect the skin, wear sterile gloves, spread a hole towel, and then use 2% lidocaine for local infiltration anesthesia.

4. Adjust the length of the bone marrow puncture needle. The puncture needle enters perpendicularly to the bone surface. When the bone puncture needle touches the bone, rotate the needle left and right. When the resistance disappears and the bone puncture needle is fixed, it means that it has entered the medullary cavity.

5. Extract the bone marrow fluid, usually 0.1 to 0.2ml, and send the smear for examination. If necessary, the bone marrow fluid will be collected for further examination such as immunophenotyping and chromosome karyotype analysis.

6. Pull out the puncture needle, apply a patch to cover the wound, press the wound for about 10 minutes, and ask the patient to keep the puncture site dry for 3 days.

Well, the bone marrow aspiration is so "happy" over.
