Failed cardiac angiography

Aug 19, 2022

In cardiography, a very thin catheter is inserted into your aorta and a small opening in the front of the catheter is used to inject contrast material into the blood of the aorta. This allows X-rays to flow along the blood vessel and show the shape of the blood vessel and the heart on a screen.

There are many factors that affect the toxic effects of angiography when large doses of contrast media are used. During ANGIOGRAPHY, THE RISK OF POISONING IS SEVERAL TIMES HIGHER IN THE FAST THAN IN THE SLOW, MAINLY BECAUSE OF THE HYPERTONIC EFFECT OF THE CONTRAST AGENT, AND EVEN THE NEWER PREPARATIONS HAVE SOME CHEMICAL TOXICITY. Under certain circumstances, the heart muscle, brain, spinal cord, or kidney are less tolerant. Regarding the choice of contrast agent, meglumine salt is the best choice for cerebrovascular angiography, and sodium salt and meglumine salt mixture is used for cardiac angiography. Anaphylaxis is less common with angiography than with UROgraphy, probably because the contrast material does not pass directly through the lungs during angiography. Of 167 patients who underwent iodoamide angiography,6 had mild allergic reactions. In the vascular distribution area, skin spots are occasionally seen, which may result from embolization of cotton fibers or glove powder due to contamination with saline used in the washers or needles.
