Development of the cutting spinal needle tip (4)
Oct 13, 2021
Gaston Labat is a highly respected French clinician who later moved to the United States. He was one of the pioneers in the widespread acceptance of spinal anesthesia in Europe and the United States in the 1920s. He designed a spinal needle made of unbreakable nickel (Figure 6). This is a medium-sized cannula with a short, sharp bevel and matching stylet, and the tip is ground to match the beveled spinal needle of the cannula. Labat's theory is that the shorter slope is like a wedge, pushing the tissue aside instead of cutting them, thereby minimizing damage to the dura.
