Complications of percutaneous liver biopsy needles

Bleeding: It is the most dangerous complication and the main cause of death. Many patients with liver cancer, or due to rough operation and poor cooperation, the puncture needle punctures the larger blood vessels in the liver.

Bile peritonitis: It is a rare but serious complication, mostly caused by puncturing the liver with high cholestasis, or stabbing the gallbladder that is displaced due to liver atrophy and deformation. If the acupuncture direction points to the anterior abdominal wall under the xiphoid process, it is not easy to puncture the gallbladder or bile duct. Pneumothorax and pleural reaction: If the puncture point is too high, or the lung and liver boundary drops due to emphysema, it can puncture the lungs and cause pneumothorax, which is relatively rare. Pleural reactions are more common, manifested as a small amount of pleural effusion. It disappears within 2-3 days without leaving pleural hypertrophy and adhesions.

Local pain: It is the most common complication of liver puncture, but mostly mild. Most of the pain is in the puncture area, and some people radiate to the right shoulder. The duration is relatively short, and analgesics are rarely needed.

Ascites overflow

Infection: As long as the operation is strictly disinfected, infection will generally not occur.

Stabbing or puncturing other internal organs: The puncture point is often selected too high or too low, or the organs are displaced. If you do a B-ultrasound examination before the operation to find out the positional relationship between the liver and its surrounding organs, it can be avoided.
