Stainless steel can be called alloy steel
Alloy steels are generally divided into low alloy steels and high alloy steels.
Low alloy steel, such as 16Mn, 18MnMoNb and so on, mainly adds a small amount of alloying elements, such as Mn, V, Mo, Nb, etc., to improve the strength, but the cost increase is relatively small. And the low temperature toughness and high temperature strength of these steels are obviously better than carbon steels.
General chemical use of high alloy steel is mainly for corrosion resistance, or low and high temperature. Mostly high chromium nickel steel, with a small amount of other elements, typical is 304,316 and so on. The metallographic structure is mostly austenite. There are also duplex steels (mostly austenitic ferrite, e.g. 2205,2507). Because these steel Cr content is generally greater than 12.5%, so it is not easy to rust, so it belongs to the category of stainless steel.
But stainless steel is not limited to austenitic structure, like ferrite, martensitic also have stainless steel. So stainless steel is a generic term for alloy steel that resizes oxidation or corrosion.
Alloy steel can be divided into chromium steel, manganese steel, silicon-manganese steel, chrome-nickel steel, etc.
Alloy steels are divided into structural steels, tool steels, stainless steels and heat-resistant steels according to their uses.
The term "stainless steel" does not simply refer to one type of stainless steel, but to more than one hundred industrial stainless steels, each of which has been developed with excellent performance in its particular application field. The key to success is first to understand the purpose, and then to determine the right kind of steel. There are usually only six types of steel that are relevant to the field of construction application. They all contain between 17 and 22 percent chromium, and the better grades also contain nickel. The addition of molybdenum can further improve the corrosion resistance of atmosphere, especially the corrosion resistance of atmosphere containing chloride.
Stainless steel is often divided into: martensitic steel, ferrite steel, austenitic steel, austenitic - ferrite (duplex) stainless steel and precipitation hardening stainless steel. In addition, can be divided into: chromium stainless steel, chromium nickel stainless steel and chromium manganese nitrogen stainless steel.
