Can Liver Puncture Examination Completely Diagnose Liver Cancer?

Mar 22, 2022

Liver biopsy cannot completely diagnose liver cancer, unless liver tissue is extracted for examination and found to be liver cancer. If no cancer cells are found in the needle biopsy, liver cancer cannot be completely ruled out, and it can only be said that the possibility of considering liver cancer is relatively small.

Because there are two possibilities: first, during the biopsy, the liver cancer itself may not be extracted, but the adjacent normal liver tissue; second, during tissue inspection and pathological sectioning, It is possible that the liver cancer cell tissue is not cut, but the normal liver tissue is cut, which may also lead to the possibility of missed diagnosis.

But generally speaking, the probability of these two situations is relatively small. Therefore, if the liver space-occupying liver cannot be clearly diagnosed by other tests, a needle biopsy can be considered. If liver cancer is diagnosed, it should be treated according to the principles of liver cancer treatment. If no liver cancer cells are found, dynamic follow-up and re-examination are required.
