Bone marrow puncture site

Bone marrow puncture needles are often selected for the posterior superior iliac spine or anterior superior iliac spine of the pelvis. The bony marks of this part are clear, and there are no large blood vessels and nerve trunks around, so it is safe. If multiple punctures are not satisfactory, sternal puncture can be selected in a few cases. As long as the needle is performed obliquely (30°～45° to the sternum), it is safer without penetrating the sternum.

Before the puncture, the puncture point must be locally anesthetized. The anaesthetic is applied from the skin and under the skin to the periosteum on the bone surface, so the puncture will not cause pain to the patient. A skilled operator usually can complete it in more than 10 minutes, so there is no need to worry about it. The puncture point should not be cleaned (including bathing) for 2 to 3 days after the sterile dressing is applied locally to avoid local infection.
