Are there any risks to a needle biopsy?

Feb 11, 2022

First of all, it must be recognized that puncture is a traumatic operation, and of course there will be the possibility of complications and sequelae, and the type and severity of complications are obviously related to the anatomical site of the biopsy. When choosing a puncture biopsy, The attending doctor should have explained it.

For example, percutaneous lung biopsy, theoretically, the main complications are chest pain, hemoptysis, atelectasis, dyspnea, etc., and bleeding is the most common adverse event after percutaneous liver biopsy. However, as long as the operation is correct, these complications and sequelae will be rare or even non-occurring. This should not be difficult to understand. Any traumatic surgery has risks. Otherwise, why should a doctor's order and informed consent be required before surgery?

Not all cases can perform needle biopsy. Taking lung biopsy as an example, needle biopsy cannot be performed in the following cases:

Obvious bleeding tendency;

serious heart disease;

Cachexia and uncooperatives;

High suspicion of vascular disease;

severe emphysema or poor lung function;

Multiple pulmonary bullae in both lungs;

The lesions are in close proximity to the hilum and mediastinal great vessels.

However, excluding the above situations where puncture cannot be performed, is it misleading to say that puncture leads to deterioration of the condition just because of adverse events that may occur in any traumatic surgery? !
