Although some stainless steels are also used, surgeons prefer titanium alloys because of their strength-to-weight ratio and better adhesion to human tissue.

Compared with the iron and aluminum alloys we are familiar with, titanium alloys are more difficult to machine. We can think of it as a type of stainless steel, but with a stronger, fibrous chip that is more prone to chipping at the entry and exit points of the tool. Carbide cutting tools do not need to be coated, because machining titanium alloys does not have the same chemical reaction as machining iron, but the cutting edge must be kept sharp. To prevent overheating during high speed machining, PVD coated inserts such as IC908-IC907-IC1008 are recommended.
