The relative molecular weight of POLYtetrafluoroethylene is large, low for hundreds of thousands, high up to 10 million, generally millions (degree of polymerization in 104 order of magnitude, and polyethylene only in 103). The general crystallinity is 90 ~ 95%, and the melting temperature is 327 ~ 342℃. The CF2 units of ptfe molecule are arranged in a zigzag shape. Since the radius of fluorine atoms is slightly larger than that of hydrogen, the adjacent CF2 units cannot completely follow the trans-cross orientation, but form a spiral twisted chain, and fluorine atoms almost cover the entire surface of the polymer chain. This molecular structure explains the various properties of PTFE. When the temperature is lower than 19℃, 13/6 spiral is formed. The phase transition occurs at 19℃, and the molecules are slightly unwound to form a 15/7 helix.
Although the rupture of carbon-carbon and carbon-fluorine bonds in perfluorocarbons requires 346.94 and 484.88kJ/mol, respectively, the depolymerization of PTFE into 1mol tetrafluoroethylene requires only 171.38kJ. So in high temperature pyrolysis, the main depolymerization of ptfe to tetrafluoroethylene. The weight loss rates (%) of PTFE at 260, 370 and 420℃ are 1× 10-4.4 ×10-3 and 9×10-2 per hour, respectively. It can be seen that PTFE can be used for a long time at 260℃. As high temperature cracking also produces highly toxic byproducts such as phosgene and perfluoroisobutene, so special attention should be paid to safety protection and prevent ptfe contact with open fire.
