It is a very light metal, with only one third of the mass of iron. Aluminum is extremely malleable and quite strong: it can be drawn into filaments or pressed into extremely thin sheets. Aluminum also has strange chemistry. On the one hand, it does not seem to be afraid of oxidation, as we can see from POTS, cans, and other aluminum utensils. On the other hand, aluminum has a very strong affinity for oxygen. Mendeleyev, the great Russian chemist, pointed out this seemingly contradictory nature. The problem is that as soon as the silvery aluminum is extracted, it coats the air with a dull film of aluminum oxide, which prevents further oxidation. Not every metal has this ability to defend itself. It is well known, for example, that rust, the oxide of iron, does nothing to protect it from further oxidation: for the oxide is too brittle to allow air and water to penetrate. The oxide film, on the other hand, is dense and elastic, making it a reliable protective layer.

When heated, aluminum combines violently with oxygen to form alumina, giving off a great deal of heat. The exothermic property of aluminum when it burns can technically be used to extract that metal from oxides of other metals by mixing a powder of aluminum with that metal oxide. This process is called thermite, in which aluminum reduces other metals by snatching oxygen from their oxides.

If you mix iron oxide powder with aluminum powder and ignite the mixture with a magnesium strip, you will see iron oxide react violently with aluminum, releasing a great deal of heat, at temperatures as high as 3,000 degrees Celsius. At these high temperatures, the iron reduced by aluminum becomes liquid, and the resulting alumina floats on the surface of the iron like dross. This active property of aluminum has been exploited to make certain refractory and technically valuable metals.
