Bone marrow biopsy is the most basic diagnostic technique in hematology department. The morphologic and compositional changes of various components and cells in the bone marrow were observed. Clinical bone marrow puncture fluid is often used for the morphological examination of blood cells, and can also be used for hematopoietic stem cell culture, cytogenetic analysis and pathogenic biological examination to assist clinical diagnosis, observation of efficacy and prognosis.

Bone marrow aspiration is suitable for diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of various hematologic diseases. Unexplained increase or decrease in the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and morphological abnormalities. The diagnosis and differential diagnosis of fever of unknown cause can be bone marrow culture, bone marrow smear to find parasites and so on. Bone marrow biopsy should be performed for multiple dry draws. Bone marrow aspiration is prohibited for hemophiliacs. Bone marrow aspiration should be done for women in the third trimester, and sternal aspiration should not be done for children and patients with different conditions.
