A lumbar puncture is performed to puncture into the subarachnoid space to extract cerebrospinal fluid and measure pressure. The puncture location is in the lumbar region.

Continuous epidural anesthesia is performed by injecting local anesthetic into the epidural cavity to achieve certain spinal cord segments and nerve roots being blocked, and the puncture can be performed anywhere from the neck to the sacral region.
