If you are anesthetized, you will lose consciousness during the operation. If you are sedated, you may feel slightly ill, but many people fall asleep or are not alert during the procedure.

During the operation, you may lie on your left side. Your doctor feeds a thin, flexible tube (an endoscope) through your throat or rectum, depending on the purpose of the procedure.

At the end of the endoscope is a tiny ultrasonic transducer. Any other instruments used during the procedure, such as needles used for biopsies, will also pass through a channel in the endoscope.
