Aluminum is a light metal, only about a third as dense as iron. Pure aluminum is soft and loses tensile strength at about 300℃, with a melting point of 660.4 degrees. The treated aluminum alloy is tough and easy to stretch. It has a metallic luster, silvery and shiny surface when smooth, and dark gray when rough. Non-magnetic and not easy to ignite.
The ability to reflect visible light is strong (about 92%), and the reflection of far infrared can reach 98%. The strength of pure aluminum is 7 ~ 11MPa, and the strength of aluminum alloy can reach 200 ~ 600MPa. Aluminum is easily machined, cut, and shaped.
Aluminum has good electrical and thermal conductivity (both 59% of copper) and is much lighter than copper. Aluminum can superconduct at temperatures below 1.2K and magnetic flux greater than 100 Gauss.
Aluminum is easy to react with oxygen, exposure to air will generate dense alumina Al2O3 on its surface (this process is passivation), effectively prevent its continued oxidation, so it is usually slightly silver gray.
