Puncture needle, also called biopsy needle or aspiration needle, is a dedicated medical instrument for extracting human tissue and fluid samples for disease diagnosis, with advantages of minimal invasion, precise drug targeting, rapid postoperative recovery and enhanced skin permeability, widely applied in clinical diagnosis, cosmetic treatment, pharmaceutical research, vaccination and veterinary care. The global puncture needle market presents a dual competition pattern of international giants and rising domestic manufacturers, and the technical strength, supply chain control and cost system of manufacturers determine their market share in high-end and mass tracks.

International leading puncture needle manufacturers represented by BD, Terumo, Medtronic and B. Braun occupy about 35% of the global high-end biopsy needle market share, relying on decades of material research and precision processing technology accumulation. These foreign manufacturers realize vertical integration of the industrial chain, independently develop high-purity medical stainless steel wire rods and exclusive tip grinding processes, and their ultrasonic visualization biopsy needles and vacuum sampling needles monopolize the high-end hospital market. Their core advantages lie in mature global certification systems and clinical data accumulation, but the product price is high, and the customization cycle for small-batch orders is long.

In recent years, domestic puncture needle manufacturers have accelerated the pace of domestic substitution, forming a tiered competitive pattern of leading listed medical device enterprises represented by Weigao and Lepu, and specialized precision manufacturing factories concentrated in the Pearl River Delta and Yangtze River Delta. Domestic manufacturers break the monopoly of foreign brands in mass disposable puncture needles and medium-end micro needle products: relying on localized raw material supply chains, they control production costs while matching international standards in precision indicators such as needle tube tolerance and surface smoothness, and can provide fast small-batch customized services for domestic hospitals and medical beauty brands.

The core gap between domestic and foreign manufacturers mainly concentrates on high-end raw materials and intelligent processing equipment. High-purity nickel-titanium alloy and imported precision five-axis grinding equipment are still partially dependent on overseas supply, leading to slightly lower yield rate of ultra-fine special puncture needles for high-end clinical use compared with foreign manufacturers. However, domestic manufacturers are increasing investment in upstream material R&D, cooperating with metal material enterprises to improve the self-sufficiency rate of 316L medical stainless steel, and independently developing domestic micro-processing equipment to narrow the technical gap year by year.

Small and medium-sized puncture needle manufacturers are trapped in homogenized price competition, only producing low-margin ordinary injection needles and simple micro needles, lacking independent R&D and certification capacity, and easily eliminated by market supervision and centralized procurement policies. In contrast, head manufacturers at home and abroad take differentiated competition paths: foreign giants focus on high-value intelligent puncture needle kits with imaging guidance, while domestic manufacturers seize the incremental markets of grassroots medical care, light medical beauty and pharmaceutical research, expand overseas export business through CE and FDA certification, and gradually realize the replacement of imported puncture needles in the global mid-end market. With the continuous improvement of precision manufacturing capacity of domestic manufacturers, the pattern that foreign brands monopolize high-end products will be further broken.
