Although CNB is a same-day minimally invasive procedure, patients frequently ask: "When can I go back to work/gym/wear underwire bras/have sex?" Here are practical, phased recommendations for resuming normal life.
Returning to Work
- Desk Job / Light Duty: May return the next day if comfortable. Avoid frequent, vigorous use of the affected arm (e.g., reaching overhead).
- Manual Labor / Heavy Lifting (>5kg / 10lbs): Rest for 3–5 days until the tract is sealed and bleeding risk subsides.
- Driving
Avoid driving for 24 hours post-procedure (residual anesthesia effects + sudden steering movements may cause pain or bleeding). After 24 hours, if arm mobility is unrestricted, driving may resume.
Exercise and Fitness
- Walking: Permitted immediately.
- Running / Aerobics: Gradually resume after 3 days if no pain/swelling.
- Upper Body Strength Training (Bench press, rows), Swimming, Contact Sports, Yoga (Deep chest openings): Wait 7–10 days. Pool water poses an infection risk to the unclosed puncture site.
- Clothing and Sleep
- Sleeping: For the first 3–5 nights, sleep on your back or opposite side to avoid compressing the biopsy site.
- Bras: Wear a wireless supportive sports bra continuously for 3–5 days. After this period, regular bras may be worn. Underwire bras are discouraged initially as the wire may press directly on the healing tract.
Sexuality and Breast Stimulation
Generally, avoid direct pressure or rough handling of the affected breast for 3–5 days. Sexual activity may resume with positions avoiding impact to the chest.
If pathology indicates malignancy requiring surgery, some clinicians advise avoiding intense nipple stimulation pre-operatively to prevent galactorrhea (milk leakage) and local congestion.
Psychological "Recovery Time"
Anxiety while awaiting pathology results (typically 3–5 business days) can amplify physical discomfort. Remind patients: "Physical recovery is usually complete within a week; the pathology result is a separate issue."Offer reassurance or distraction techniques as needed.
Summary: CNB has minimal impact on quality of life. Most patients self-care within 24 hours, return to light work in 3 days, and resume all activities (including exercise) within a week.
