Epidural Needle

Epidural needle, when the catheter is considered to be placed in the epidural space, a test dose of lidocaine plus epinephrine should be given to ensure that the catheter is not in the intrathecal space or in the blood vessel. The commonly used test dose consists of 3 to 5 mL of 1.5% lidocaine and 1:200,000 epinephrine. If no changes in heart rate or spinal cord block are found, the chest wall should be assessed to demonstrate sensory levels. After this is done, approximately 5 to 8 mL of 0.125% bupivacaine and fentanyl at 4 μg/mL can be injected epidurally.
