During Lumbar Puncture, When The Puncture Needle Is Finally Removed Without Inserting The Needle Core, Will There Be Any Complications?

Aug 02, 2014

When puncturing the needle or withdrawing it, the needle core should be inserted because:

A. A puncture needle without a needle core may bring a small epidermal embolus to the subarachnoid space during puncture;

B. Needle-free puncture needles may inhale some nerve root fibers when withdrawing, causing pain.

From: Lumbar puncture operation specification (please search for detailed documents in Baidu Library, link Du Niang seems not to let you post)

The following is my own opinion:

The possibility of complications is unlikely, but there is a potential risk of not inserting the needle core when the puncture needle is finally removed, which may damage some small nerve fibers. If you think carefully, on the other hand, I personally think that inserting the needle core again when pulling out may bring the risk of external infectious materials into the subarachnoid space, so aseptic operation during the puncture process is very important .
