Complications From Puncture Under Local Anesthesia

Jul 08, 2022

1. Nerve damage

The nerve may be directly damaged during puncture, especially with abnormal sensation. The use of short bevel needle and nerve stimulator localization can reduce the incidence of nerve injury. Intraneuronal injection should also be avoided during puncture.

2. Hematoma formation

Hematoma formation is occasionally observed during peripheral nerve block, which has an impact on both local anesthetic diffusion and puncture location. Therefore, prior to puncture operation, the history of bleeding should be inquired, puncture needles should be used as thin as possible, and the operation should be careful near the site with abundant blood vessels.

3. The infection

If the sterility principle is not strict during operation or the infection can be further spread by puncture through infected tissue, local infection should be regarded as contraindication of local anesthesia.
